The Grumman TBM-3 Avenger was a World War II-era torpedo bomber widely used by the United States Navy. Originally designed by Grumman as the TBF Avenger, the TBM designation reflected aircraft built by General Motors. The TBM-3 variant featured a more powerful Wright R-2600 engine and improved armament, including .50 caliber machine guns and the ability to carry torpedoes, bombs, or depth charges. With a crew of three—pilot, turret gunner, and radioman/bombardier—the Avenger was known for its rugged construction, long range, and heavy payload capacity. It played a crucial role in major Pacific battles such as Battle of Midway and later proved effective in anti-submarine warfare. Its durability and versatility made it one of the most successful naval aircraft of the war.
