The Northrop YF-23 Black Widow II, often informally referred to as the F-23, was an advanced stealth fighter prototype developed for the U.S. Air Force’s Advanced Tactical Fighter competition in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Designed for extreme stealth, high speed, and long-range performance, it featured a distinctive diamond-shaped wing, canted tail surfaces, and deeply recessed engine inlets that minimized radar visibility. The YF-23 demonstrated excellent supercruise capability and impressive agility despite lacking thrust-vectoring nozzles. Its sleek, futuristic design emphasized low observability and energy efficiency, making it a strong competitor against the Lockheed YF-22. Although ultimately not selected for production, the Black Widow II remains admired for its innovation, forward-thinking aerodynamics, and influence on later stealth aircraft concepts.
